Hydra Winds performed “Dodici” by Karel Reiner on February 19th in Lucy Rubin’s Lecture Recital Silenced Scores: Rediscovering Chamber Music of WWII’s Forbidden Composer. Here is what Lucy has to share about Reiner and Dodici:

“Karel Reiner was born in 1910 to a Jewish family. He was taken to the Theresienstadt Ghetto in July 1943, becoming an influential musical figure by producing dramas and comedies for the enjoyment of his fellow prisoners. He was one of the only classical composers to survive Theresienstadt, and he was deported to Auschwitz in 1944. He was kept safe and alive as two camp doctors recognized him from before the war.

Dodici was written in 1931 but later revised in 1963, featuring a lot of the jazz influence that was becoming popular during the interwar period. Hydra Winds’ clarinetist Danny King @dannyking_clarinet has had a busy summer performing and teaching. 🎶

Danny’s summer started off by participating in the first annual Illinois State University Alumni Concert Band and taught clarinet masterclasses at ISU’s high school band camp @ilstu_bands. Then made his way down to Miami, FL for @miamimusicfest where he performed as principal clarinet and fellow in several operas including Mozart Magic Flute, Heggie Dead Man Walking, Wagner Die Walkure, with additional symphony performances. 🌴Following Miami, Danny taught his 5th band camp in Bloomington, IL and reconnected with his former teacher and accompanist for recording sessions. He is looking forward to heading back to NYC 🗽and playing in Hydra very soon. Congrats to Danny on a successful and musical summer!☀️
